Clean Break is published by North Tumbleweed LLC (“we,” “us,” “our”), a U.S. limited liability company. This policy describes how the Clean Break iOS app handles your data. It does not cover other apps we publish, which have their own policies.
By installing or using Clean Break, you agree to this policy. If you don't, please don't use the app.
Clean Break does not require you to create an account. We do not ask you to sign in. We do not collect your name, email address, or phone number. You are anonymous to us by default.
To run the coach and keep your subscription consistent across reinstalls, the app generates a single random identifier the first time you open it — a string like 9f3c1a2b-… — and stores it in your device's secure keychain. This identifier is not tied to your identity. It is not your Apple ID, your name, or your email. We use it only to keep your coach budget separate from other users' and to restore your subscription if you reinstall.
The following are stored on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework and sync privately through your own iCloud (Apple's CloudKit private database, in your personal iCloud account), so your progress survives a new phone. They are never sent to our servers, and we never have access to the copy in your iCloud:
All of your money figures — what you've “burned,” what you've saved, your projections — are calculated on your device from the numbers you entered. They are never sent to us.
The coach is the only feature that communicates with a server. When you send your coach a message, the app sends over an encrypted connection (HTTPS/TLS) to our backend, hosted on Railway:
Our backend forwards your message and that snapshot to an AI service we use to generate the coach's reply. The reply is returned to your device. We do not sell your coach messages, and we do not authorize them to be used to train AI models.
Your coach conversation history is stored on your device. To give the coach continuity over time, our backend may keep a small set of durable notes about your patterns (for example, “quit attempts: 2” or “main trigger: stress after work”), along with usage records used to enforce the coach's daily and monthly limits. These are keyed to your anonymous per-install identifier — never to your name or email — and stored in a Supabase database.
When you subscribe to Clean Break, Apple's StoreKit handles the transaction. We receive an anonymous transaction identifier and an entitlement signal (“active” / “not active”). We use RevenueCat to verify entitlements and manage the subscription lifecycle. RevenueCat receives our anonymous identifier. Neither Apple nor RevenueCat receives your name or email from Clean Break, because we don't ask for them.
We use AppsFlyer to measure which ads bring people to Clean Break, so we know where to spend our marketing budget. AppsFlyer collects install and in-app event data (for example: app installed, onboarding screen reached, paywall shown, subscription started). These events are keyed to your anonymous per-install identifier and carry only coarse categories — never your raw dollar figures, your habit details, or the contents of your coach chats.
The first time you open the app, iOS shows you Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. AppsFlyer collects your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) only if you allow tracking at that prompt. If you choose “Ask App Not to Track,” no IDFA is collected and attribution falls back to Apple's privacy-preserving measurement. You can change this choice any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking on your device.
Clean Break is an 18+ app. To confirm you are old enough, on first launch we use Apple's Declared Age Range API to check whether your App Store account indicates you are 18 or older. If that signal isn't available, we ask you to enter your date of birth once as a fallback.
We do not store your date of birth, and we do not store your exact age. The age check produces a single yes/no result — old enough, or not — and only that result is kept. Age information is never sent to our backend and never sent to AppsFlyer.
Separately, during the quiz we ask for your age as a plain number. This is used only to personalize your money projection (“by age X”) and to give the coach context. It is stored on your device with the rest of your quiz answers and is never used for the age gate.
Clean Break relies on a small number of third-party services to function. Here is the complete list.
| Service | What it receives | Their role |
|---|---|---|
| AI service (via our backend) | Your coach messages and a small context snapshot of your progress. Never your name, email, or any identifying details — we don't have them. | Generates coach replies. |
| Railway | Coach API traffic transits Railway, which hosts our backend. No camera data, no photos, no location — the app collects none. | Backend infrastructure. |
| Supabase | Durable coach memory notes and coach usage records, keyed to your anonymous per-install identifier. | Database. |
| Apple (StoreKit) | Your subscription transaction. Apple processes the payment; we never see your card or billing details. | Processes payment. |
| RevenueCat | Anonymous purchase tokens and entitlement state, plus our anonymous identifier so subscription analytics can be joined against install source — no name, email, or chat content. | Subscription management + attribution join. |
| AppsFlyer | Anonymous install-attribution events (install, paywall_shown, subscription_started, etc.), keyed to your anonymous identifier, plus your device advertising identifier (IDFA) only if you allow tracking. Does NOT receive your coach chats, your money figures, or your habit details. | Marketing attribution. |
Each of these has their own privacy policy:
We do not sell your data to any of them or to anyone else. Data shared with these services is the minimum needed to provide the feature you used.
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Your quiz answers, quit plan, goals, slips, check-ins, coach history (on your device + your private iCloud) | Kept on your device and in your own iCloud until you tap “Delete all my data” in Settings (which removes both copies), or delete the app. We never hold a copy. |
| Durable coach memory notes (Supabase) | Retained while the service needs them to give your coach continuity; deleted upon verified request. |
| Coach usage records (Supabase) | Retained as needed to enforce daily and monthly coach limits; aggregated and expired over time. |
| Subscription records (Apple + RevenueCat) | Per Apple's and RevenueCat's retention policies — typically as long as needed for billing, refunds, and legal obligations. |
| Install-attribution events (AppsFlyer) | Per AppsFlyer's retention policy. |
| Your date of birth / exact age (age gate) | Never stored. Only a yes/no “old enough” result is kept. |
Because Clean Break's data lives on your device and in your own private iCloud, you control it directly. You can:
For the small amount of server-side data we hold (durable coach memory notes and coach usage records keyed to your anonymous identifier, and anonymous subscription tokens), you can request:
To make a request, email support@northtumbleweed.com. Because Clean Break is anonymous and we don't have your name or email on file, please contact us from the device with the app installed so we can locate your records via your subscription receipt or anonymous identifier. We will respond within 30 days.
You can allow or deny ad tracking at the App Tracking Transparency prompt on first launch, and change it any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Denying tracking does not change anything about how the app works for you.
To cancel your subscription, go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iOS device. We cannot cancel your subscription on your behalf — Apple owns that interface.
To request deletion of subscription records held by RevenueCat, contact us and we will forward the request.
Clean Break is an 18+ app. It is intended only for adults who are working to quit nicotine, and we gate access on first launch. We do not knowingly collect any data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has used the app, contact support@northtumbleweed.com and we will delete any associated data promptly.
We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by not collecting any personally identifying information from any user, regardless of age.
If you are in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and related laws.
We process minimal personal data. Most of what the app knows about you stays between your device and your own private iCloud, which we never access. The data we do touch on the server side (coach messages, durable coach notes, anonymous identifiers) is processed under contractual necessity, legitimate interest, or your consent (for ad tracking via the App Tracking Transparency prompt).
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port, or object to the processing of your data. To exercise any of these rights, email support@northtumbleweed.com. Because we don't hold your name or email by default, please contact us from the device with the app installed so we can locate your records via your subscription receipt or anonymous identifier. We will respond within 30 days.
If you are unsatisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
California residents have the right to know what categories of personal information we collect, to access copies, to request deletion, and to opt out of any sale. We do not sell personal information. To exercise these rights, email support@northtumbleweed.com from the device with the app installed. We will verify your request via your subscription receipt or anonymous identifier and respond within 45 days.
We protect data in transit and at rest using industry-standard practices:
No security system is perfect. If you become aware of a vulnerability, please email support@northtumbleweed.com.
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. When we do, we will update the “Effective” and “Last updated” dates at the top. For material changes (anything that affects how we collect or use your data), we will display an in-app notice before the change takes effect, and where reasonable provide at least 30 days' notice.
For privacy questions or data requests: support@northtumbleweed.com.
